Looking at the age, family was worried to take the decision. When they met Dr Ashish Arbat at Fortis Hospital Kalyan their confidence level increased and were confident taking decision of undergoing Hip replacement surgery.
Dr Ashish Arbat, orthopedic surgeon at Fortis Hospital said, “When Leo came to me, he was completely bedridden and he needed a hip replacement surgery. When we told him about the surgery and advance technology available to operate patient at this age, Family was readily willing to go under the scalpel, which was an assuring sign. We made the patient walk on day three after the surgery and he is doing fine.”
Kolge, who can now walk without any support, said, “I was totally bedridden and needed support. Since age was not on my side, a few doctors refused surgery. After the surgery, I am happy that I am back on my foot. Now I can walk alone to church”
“An older patient needs to be fit for a total hip replacement surgery. Total hip replacement surgeries are mostly done on patients aged between 55 and 80. It also depends on the bone condition of the patient and how fit s/he is” says Dr Arbat.
“Total Hip Replacement surgery was very complicated at this age & was successfully done with MIS (minimally invasive surgery); Minimal skin incision up to 4 inches. Special smaller instruments called MIS instruments were used in the surgery. Surgery took about 1 hour, and with expert anesthesia very less blood loss. Post surgery Leo was made to stand on 2nd day & was discharged day 4, only on oral medicines. Physciotharphy execise was conducted at his home which made him to come walking to us by 3 weeks” says Dr Arbat.
Haresh Trivedi, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan Says “In today’s lifestyle everyone wants to be fit & fine to avoid further complications in their leading lifestyle without falling sick and to be away from pain, so they take all the efforts they can by regularly exercising and by following a healthy diet . If we see the past scenario, there was a time when people were afraid and avoid of going big surgeries and coming to the old age factor, the thoughts of going through the surgery was a mental trauma. They would prefer to bear the pain but will not go ahead for surgery for relieving the pain but the 21st century thought process bypassed all the old thoughts and people were open to accept new technologies which offers best care to their health if surgery required. Infact, they go one step ahead by doing research on the ailments and to get the best benefit out of it”
“Earlier in India operating such old patient it was difficult or may be Dr’s were not confident to take the challenges. Doctor in abroad do regular surgeries on old ages have change the mind sets of Indian Dr. With latest technology Dr’s now confident to operate on such old ages” Said Trivedi
